~Grungy & Primitive~

Rusty Grungy Safety Pins

After trying so many different "rusting recipes", We are so happy to share this one with you!  This recipe will give you lots of rust and lots of grunge.  It takes a couple of days to get this great old look, but it's well worth the wait!  This is the way we rust everything..pins, bells, chains...anything we need to use to finish off the grungy details!

Day 1

Step 1: Get a package of safety pins from your local Dollar Store or discount store...be sure they are not stainless steel...those won't rust!!  Mix 2 Cups of Apple Cider Vinegar and 1 Cup of Household Bleach in an old container or bucket.  Be Sure You Do This Outside In A Well Ventilated Area. Dump your safety pins in this mix and be sure they are completely covered.  Let them soak for 1 hour.  Put on your Rubber Gloves and remove the safety pins, spreading them out flat on an old metal cookie sheet...not teflon or non-stick!!  Allow to dry outside overnight.

Step 2: By morning you should see some rust or discoloration.  Using a small spray bottle, mist over the pins with Apple Cider Vinegar...just a light coat.  Allow the pins to dry outside.

Step 3:  After 6-8 hours, flip the pins over and mist again with the Apple Cider Vinegar.  Allow to sit outside overnight

Day 2

Step 1: Good Morning!! Flip those pins once again and be sure they are spread out and lying flat.  Once again, using youyr spray bottle, mist lightly with the Apple Cider Vinegar.  Let them dry outside.

Step 2: Once the pins are completely dry, spray a light coat of Spray Adhesive all over the pins.  Sprinkle with lots of cinnamon.  Spray the adhesive again, over the cinnamon.  Sprinkle just a bit of cinnamon and allow to dry.

Step 3: When pins are dry, flip over and spray a light coat of Spray Adhesive and sprinkle with lots of cinnamon.  Spray the adhesive again, over the cinnamon and then sprinkle just a bit of cinnamon and allow to dry.
